He's the longest-tenured justice, and he's the only moderate remaining. He's inconsistently conservative, but replacing him with someone more solidly so will be an improvement, however slight. But perhaps the biggest benefit here is to have confirmation hearings for his successor, and listen to the Democrat senators from Montana, Indiana, West Virginia, North Dakota, and Missouri hem and haw about their vote knowing that they are running for re-election next year in states that Trump won bigly. So Trump actually comes at this with more than 52 votes already in hand for no matter who he nominates. The nuclear option was already used once, and it will be used again, and that's just how we operate nowadays.
