What to watch for: Grandstanding. Nothing but grandstanding. A guy who was unanimously confirmed in 2006 by a Senate that contained such figures as Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Chuck Schumer will now be deemed to be unfit to serve and borderline insane by Democrats. But not by all Democrats. Watch in particular how the Democrat Senators from Montana, Indiana, West Virginia, and North Dakota proceed. All are up for re-election in 2018, and all serve states that Trump won bigly. Some pundits think that Democrats will largely hold their fire on this one. After all, replacing a Conservative textualist with another Conservative textualist does not alter the ideological balance of the court. Or at least, what it had been. And if they only push back lightly, watch as the base gets enraged by their lack of fight, and move to primary relatively safe incumbent Senators like Claire McCaskill!! But if Anthony Kennedy (age 80) announces his retirement soon, grab your valuables because replacing a moderate Conservative who was the swing vote on the Obergefell decision with another Conservative textualist (one who is less likely to find the word "marriage" in the 14th amendment) will be apocalyptic in the eyes of the left, who has long viewed the courts as the ones who truly make the law (except when it's a law they don't like, such as the Citizens United case, the Second Amendment, the First Amendment, the Fourth Amendment, and you know what, just throw in the whole Bill of Rights). About the only thing worse would be if Breyer or Ginsberg were to announce their retirement. Which, with Trump being the one to nominate their replacements, is unlikely...
